Staph. aureus likely causative organism

Treatment - (First line)

Therapy

<1 months: Cefotaxime IV (at CNS dose) + metronidazole IV/PO

>1 months: Ceftriaxone IV (at CNS dose) + metronidazole IV/PO

 

Notes:

If no organism identified IVOST to PO co-amoxiclav and metronidazole 

If penicillin allergic co-trimoxazole and metronidazole

Complete 7-10 day course.

Notes

May need surgical drainage; discuss with ENT. If cold abscess, then discuss with tertiary centre.

Review treatment following culture result and discuss with microbiology.
