Further information:
Prompt treatment with appropriate antibiotics significantly reduces the risk of complications. Observe immunocompromised individuals (diabetes; women in the peripartum period; chickenpox) as they are at increased risk of developing invasive infection
Arrange urgent hospital admission if a person has:
-
- Severe symptoms that cannot be managed in primary care.
- A suspected serious or life-threatening complication.
- A high risk of developing complications, depending on clinical judgement.

Phenoxymethylpenicillin
500mg QDS
Child
1 to 11 months: 62.5mg QDS or 125mg BD
1 to 5 years: 125mg QDS or 250mg BD
6 to 11 years: 250mg QDS or 500mg BD
12 to 17 years: 500mg QDS or 1000mg BD
10 days
Penicillin Allergy >6 month old:
Azithromycin
10 mg/kg OD (max. per dose 500 mg):
Weight 15-25kg: 200 mg OD
Weight 26–35 kg: 300 mg OD
Weight 36–45 kg: 400 mg OD
Weight ≥46 kg: 500 mg OD
5 days
Penicillin allergy <6 month old:
Clarithromycin
Under 8 kg - 7.5mg/kg BD
8 to 11 kg - 62.5mg BD
10 days
Penicillin allergy and Pregnant/Postpartum (within 28 days of childbirth)
Erythromycin
500mg QDS
