Duration

3 days

Notes

Therapy

  • Uncomplicated UTI – ie no signs or symptoms of severe systemic infection
  • Samples should be taken prior to starting treatment.
  • Send blood for culture if pyrexial.
  • Send MSSU (carefully collected to avoid contamination.)
  • Do not treat asymptomatic bacteriuria (unless pregnant or urological surgery)
  • Maintain adequate hydration – aim to drink 1.5L of water a day if no contraindications.
  • Review with microbiology results when available.

Uncomplicated UTI - first line

Therapy

Trimethoprim oral 200mg twice daily for 3 days

Uncomplicated UTI - 2nd line

Therapy

Nitrofurantoin oral 50mg four times daily for 3 days

Notes:

Please note that overlabelled packs for nitrofurantoin are only available as modified release capsules, 100mg twice daily.

  •  For recurrent infections refer to Recurrent UTI infection guidance [intranet link only].

  • In patients with CKD3 or above and/or those at risk of hyperkalaemia these agents may be unsuitable. Please check current prescribing advice as per BNF and seek specialist advice if alternative agent required.
