Co-trimoxazole can be used as an alternative to a quinolone where a gram-negative organism is suspected.
Refer to CKS - Scrotal pain and swelling: epididymo-orchitis for empirical antibiotic choices but please note that in NHS Grampian:
- The recommended treatment duration is 10 days.
- Co-trimoxazole can be considered as an alternative to a quinolone to treat epididymitis where the likely causative organism is a gram negative enteric organism and there is a low risk of a sexually transmitted infection.
