Welcome to NHS Borders Weight Management Team RefHelp homepage.

The Borders Weight Management Service provides support for those wishing to make lifestyle changes throughout the full lifecycle. 

This service is a single point of triage for all referrals for children and young people under age 18 years old, above the 91st BMI centile who wish to have support with making healthy lifestyle changes and feel ready to engage.

This service is part of the Borders Weight Management team that provides support for adults and children. 

Who to refer, who not to refer, how to refer

Who to refer:

  • Any child or young person >91st centile for BMI (RCPCH/WHO BMI centile charts).
  • Families who are motivated and ready to make lifestyle changes

 

Who not to refer:

  • Children or families who require alternative support prior to being ready to attend our service e.g. for severe food phobias, complex social issues, complex mental health issues that may be exacerbated by engaging in a weight management service

The following information is desired in a referral letter to help the triage process:

  • Co-morbidities (if any)
  • Current height, weight, BMI and BMI centile (if possible)
  • Any identified barriers to changing their behaviour
  • Mobility levels
  • Details of any past or on-going mental health problems
  • Any other NHS services involved in care
  • Any relevant social history

 

Primary care management

  • A recent accurate weight and height, please include the date measurements are taken
  • And, if under 12 years old, discussion with the parents/carers about the referral and their role.
