Adult snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea

Warning

Who to refer, who not to refer, how to refer

Along with the rest of NHS Scotland, NHS Borders does not provide a service for snoring patients and will not accept referrals to see patients for snoring.  Patients with suspected Obstructive Sleep Apnoea should be referred directly to the Lothian Sleep Clinic.

Patients with simple snoring should be given advice on optimising their weight, reducing alcohol / sedatives where applicable and if the snoring is positional advice on how to maintain an optimal sleeping position such as by sewing a ball into the back of their pyjamas to stop them lying on their back which is often the worst position for snoring. Any persistent nasal blockage should be treated but this is rarely the sole cause of snoring. There is some evidence that mandibular advancement splints can help some people with snoring but these are not provided by the NHS so would need to be obtained privately via a dentist or orthodontist.
