Warning

FSH testing is not thought to be helpful in the management of women of usual menopause age.  Large variations in levels of gonadotrophins are seen in women in perimenopause. It is not useful in  guiding management of symptoms. The laboratory will not accept requests for FSH testing in women of 45 years or older.

A diagnosis of menopause can be made after 12 months of amenorrhea.

In younger women FSH can be helpful in diagnosing early menopause.
