All patients with first seizures and chronic epilepsy are seen by the consultant neurologists in general neurology clinics.

Who to refer, who not to refer, how to refer

First Seizure

Who to refer:

  • Anyone in whom you suspect a possible first ever epileptic seizure or new diagnosis of epilepsy, and think would benefit from a specialist opinion regarding diagnosis, investigations and possible treatment.

What tests should you do in advance:

  • Ideally, FBC, urea and electrolytes, calcium, glucose, liver function tests and ECG

Who not to refer:

  • Patients already in neurology follow-up. For advice on existing patients please email neurology@borders.scot.nhs.uk
