Parkinson Disease / Movement disorders

  • Patients with suspected Parkinson Disease or related movement disorders are assessed and managed by Neurology or Medicine of the Elderly consultants depending upon age and frailty
  • For any patients, particularly those aged under 70 years / biologically young between 70 and 75 years of age, or those with atypical movement disorders, refer to Neurology via SCI Gateway
  • For patients aged over 75 years or frail, with multi-comorbidity, refer to Parkinson Service via SCI Gateway
  • The Neurology Movement Disorder and Parkinson Disease service is run by Dr Myles Connor and for Parkinson Disease, Jill Anderson, PD Nurse Specialist
  • There is one part time (Monday to Wednesday) Parkinson Disease Nurse Specialist in NHS Borders:
    • Jill Anderson, Jill.Anderson@nhs.scot

Who to refer, who not to refer, how to refer

Who to refer:

Anyone with a suspected diagnosis of parkinsonism.
Patients who have been diagnosed elsewhere with parkinsonism and are new to the area.
Patients should be referred at time of diagnosis and may be re-referred at any time in their journey.

 

Who not to refer:

Anyone without any signs suggestive of a movement disorder, though that is likely obvious

 

How to refer:

Primary care management

Patients should ideally not start Parkinson disease medication prior to secondary care assessment or discussion.
