Non-routine clinic referrals
In most instances eligible citizens will be sent information directly about their vaccination appointment via letter, text or email. Referral is not necessary for these citizens.
Patients with an underlying health condition, or are receiving surgery or treatments including chemotherapy, could be at higher risk from certain diseases. These patients may require vaccination outside the routine programmes. Please refer to the UK immunisation schedule: Green Book for further information The Green Book chapter 11
Post-exposure prophylaxis including tetanus, BBVs or rabies are administered a first dose by the initial care provider, for example: General Practice, Emergency Department, Borders Addiction Service, Sexual Health Service etc. If further doses are required to complete the course, patients can be referred to the vaccination service.
Clinicians can refer directly to the vaccination non-routine clinic by emailing a completed Referral form to vaccination.referrals@borders.nhs.uk. On receipt of a referral, the vaccination hub will contact patients to arrange an appointment.

Travel clinic
NHS Borders runs a weekly travel health clinic, offering vaccinations and guidance prior to travel. Travellers can self-refer and should seek advice at least 10 weeks prior to their departure date. If travelling with less than 10 weeks notice, travellers are advised to contact a private travel clinic.
Travellers are advised to visit the Fit For Travel website for up-to-date health information prior to completing a health questionnaire. Please click on here to access the questionnaire. The health questionnaire will be used to risk assess a patient’s journey and identify any vaccination requirements.
Depending on the vaccinations needed, some vaccine costs will be at the patient’s expense as not all vaccines are available on the NHS. Please click travel-health-vaccinations for more information about our travel health clinics.
Travel clinics are held in Outpatients Department H, Borders General Hospital, Melrose TD6 9BS.
