Tinnitus

Background: Tinnitus is the perception of abnormal noise in one or both ears.  This may be associated with hearing loss.   In the vast majority of patients there is no underlying disorder, and no correctable cause. 

How to assess: Perform Freefield hearing test to determine if associated hearing loss present

Referral guidance:

Referral for bilateral tinnitus is not required.  Patients should be supported with useful information 

Patients with unilateral tinnitus should be referred to Audiology on a routine basis.

Patients with ipsilateral hearing loss should be referred to Audiology on a routine basis

Patients with bilateral hearing loss should be referred to Audiology on a routine basis
