Foreign body nose
Background: Foreign bodies in the nose are unusual in adult patients. It is however more common in those with learning disability. It may present with recurrent unilateral nasal discharge. Caregivers may not have witnessed the insertion of the foreign body.
Button battery foreign bodies are considered an ENT emergency and require removal as soon as possible to prevent complications and potentially death.
Organic foreign bodies (wool / peas) should be removed urgently as they cause inflammation within the nasal cavity and can be more difficult / painful to remove if delayed
Inorganic foreign bodies may be present for some time before causing symptoms. However, given their location in the nasal airway, the should be seen in a timely manner by ENT
Referral guidance:
Refer any suspected button battery in the nose to ENT as an emergency for immediate review
