Warning

Cough is frequently attributed to throat symptoms but is seldom related. Patient should be managed initially via the respiratory department.

Consider:

  • Reflux – managed with lifestyle advice, weight reduction and alginate therapy. If necessary, refer to gastroenterology
  • Frequent throat clearing – advise avoidance of throat clearing which can become habitual
  • Catarrh / Post-nasal drip – catarrh and mucous are considered normal nasal sections. Avoiding medicalisation of these symptoms is key and reassurance should be offered.
