Personal space and boundaries are important for maintaining healthy relationships. Boundaries help individuals feel safe, respected and valued. These can include physical, emotional and digital boundaries and these vary from person to person.

Respecting someone’s personal space means not overstepping their physical proximity, emotional needs or comfort zones. Clear communication is essential to understanding what is acceptable to each individual.

Setting boundaries is a personal process and it’s okay to say no to things that feel uncomfortable. If someone repeatedly disrespects boundaries, it could be a sign of an unhealthy relationship.

Within residential service settings it’s important to respect peoples right to privacy and personal space, always knocking before entering service users private space is good practice.
