The World Health Organization external link defines Sexual Health as: “A state of physical, emotional, mental and social wellbeing in relation to sexuality; it is not merely the absence of disease, dysfunction or infirmity. Sexual health requires a positive and respectful approach to sexuality and sexual relationships, as well as the possibility of having pleasurable and safe sexual experiences, free of coercion, discrimination and violence.”

  • Sexual Health relates to many aspects of a person including physical, emotional and social aspects of their life.
  • Ensuring that individuals have awareness of sexual health services including information, testing and contraception is important in maintaining positive/good sexual health.
  • A positive and respectful approach to conversations about sexuality and sexual relationships supports individuals to discuss their sexuality and make informed decisions about their sexual health.

Why is it important that staff working with adults ensure that people have the right information about sexual health?

Some people may be less likely volunteer information or ask questions about their sexual health, so being able to raise the topic is important.  Staff working in health and social care services play an important role in ensuring that people have access to accurate information, services and support. It is also important that staff feel supported with key facts and information and know where to find reliable sources of information when they need it.
