FGM involves the partial or total removal of external female genitalia for non-medical reasons. It is illegal in the UK and considered a form of abuse and violence against women and girls.
FGM can have severe physical and psychological consequences, including chronic pain, infections, complications during childbirth and impact on mental health. The practice is rooted in cultural, religious or social norms within some cultures.
