Warning

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are infections that can be passed from one person to another through sexual contact.

Timely treatment of STIs is essential to prevent complications and further transmission.

Testing and diagnosis:

  • If someone suspects that they have an STI or have been exposed to one or have had unprotected sex it's important to get tested.
  • Testing may involve urine tests, blood tests, swabs or physical examinations.
  • Many STIs may not cause symptoms so regular testing is important, especially if someone has multiple sexual partners.

Treatment options:

  • Treatment for STIs usually involves antibiotics, antiviral medications, or antifungal medications depending on the type of infection.
  • The type and duration of treatment will vary depending on the specific STI. It's important for people complete the full course of treatment, even if symptoms improve.

Prevention:

  • Consistent and correct use of condoms during sexual activity can reduce the risk of STIs
