Cervical screening (smear test) in Scotland ![]()
Screening and self-checks are important for maintaining both general and sexual health and detecting health problems early. Regular sexual health screenings can identify sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and blood borne viruses (BBVs) while cervical screening (smear tests) helps prevent cervical cancer by identifying abnormal cells.
For sexual health screening information see Sandyford: Testing for sexually transmitted infections
For self-checks, individuals should monitor their bodies for any unusual symptoms such as lumps, unusual discharge or changes in the genitals or breasts. Testicular self-examinations are recommended for men, and breast awareness is important for all genders.
If individuals notice anything unusual about their body when carrying out self checks, they should seek medical advice.
