HIV PrEP in Scotland
- HIV remains a public health challenge for Scotland1.
- Data for 2024 indicate a total of 375 newly reported diagnoses, the second highest number of reports of HIV in the last 10 years; 125 of these were first ever diagnoses2.
- Both the number and proportion of first ever diagnoses were decreasing until 20212. Work is ongoing to interpret the ongoing impact of HIV PrEP on HIV transmission among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men.
- The majority of infections are sexually transmitted. In 2024, GBMSM accounted for 38% of first ever HIV diagnoses which was an increase compared to 2023. The proportion of heterosexually acquired first ever diagnoses recorded remained high but decreased to 47% in 2024 which exceeded the proportion recorded within GBMSM for the third successive year2.
- In 2024, 29% (11/38) of new diagnoses in GBMSM tested for antibody avidity were recently acquired (in the previous 3-4 months), which is higher than most other groups2*.
*Other risk groups include sexual intercourse between men and women, people who inject drugs and “other”
