What is the evidence base for HIV PrEP?

  • PROUD Study – demonstrated effectiveness of DAILY PrEP in >500 GBMSM and Trans-women over 13 sexual health clinics in England – 86% reduction in HIV infections for group taking PrEP (2016)5.
  • IPERGAY Study – demonstrated 86% reduction in HIV transmission using event-based dosing in a group of 400 GBMSM and Trans-women across Canada and France6.
  • Randomised Controlled Trials in heterosexuals - demonstrated a 77% (TDF2 study) and 73% (Partners in PrEP) reduction in HIV transmission7,8.
  • The Centre of Disease Control (CDC) estimate with optimal/consistent use PrEP is 99% effective4.

Impact in Scotland

  • The incidence of HIV in GBMSM in Scotland reduced by 75% among those prescribed PrEP in the first two years of the PrEP programme compared to those in the same cohort attending in the first two years prior to the introduction of PrEP10.
  • A beneficial (although lesser) effect of PrEP on HIV incidence was also observed among GBMSM not prescribed PrEP during the first two years of the programme10.
  • Work is ongoing to interpret the ongoing impact of HIV PrEP on HIV transmission among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men.
