Briefing note

Background

Scottish Government published a comprehensive HIV transmission elimination delivery plan (2023-26) in March 2024, based on targets and recommendations proposed in 2022. Its vision was to have zero people acquiring HIV within Scotland by 2030.

A key action is to raise awareness of and widen access to HIV PrEP for those who would most benefit from it.

Why it is important to raise awareness of PrEP?

For people more at risk of HIV, PrEP prevents HIV transmission.

PrEP works whatever your age, sex, gender, sexual orientation, belief or ethnicity.

PrEP has been available for free from the NHS in Scotland since July 2017. 89% of people who have accessed PrEP in Scotland are gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM). However, there are other people who could benefit from PrEP who may not be aware of PrEP and how it works. Therefore, it’s important to raise awareness of PrEP and how to access it - for all who could benefit.

PrEP is just one tool of many to prevent HIV. For more information about preventing HIV visit NHS Inform.

Why are we sharing these resources?

These resources were developed with and for communities more at risk of HIV.  These resources are easily shareable and understandable.

We are asking organisations, community groups and health boards to use these resources to help expand awareness of and support access to PrEP.
