HIV PrEP should be offered equitably to all those who may benefit in line with PrEP suitability guidance for Scotland. PrEP should be offered to people, regardless of their gender or sexual orientation who would benefit from a reduction in HIV risk including:

  • people who request PrEP
  • people at risk of HIV
  • people who, regardless of gender or sexual orientation, are likely to have condomless anal or vaginal sex with people at risk of HIV
  • people who inject drugs who might share injecting equipment.

HIV risk is defined as where HIV risk is likely to be in excess of the background UK population and where benefit outweighs clinical risk of PrEP.
