Warning

Vaccinations are one of the most effective ways to protect yourself from serious illness, reduce your risk of coming into hospital, and help keep those around you safe.

How can getting vaccinated help my COPD?

Flare ups or exacerbations of COPD can be caused by respiratory viruses. Being up to date with vaccinations helps reduce the chance you will become seriously unwell with these infections. Vaccinations are proven to reduce the risk of exacerbations in COPD.

Which vaccinations are recommended for people with COPD?

The Influenza or Flu vaccine – given every year in the autumn and winter

The Pneumococcal vaccine – given either as a one-off single dose or one dose every 5 years, depending on underlying health conditions

The COVID-19 vaccine - given every year, usually alongside the flu vaccine

How can I get vaccinated?

To make vaccination more accessible across NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, there are:

  • 20 venues offering extended evening hours.
  • A Mobile Vaccination Unit (MVU) available for walk-ins with no appointment required.
  • Many Community Pharmacies offering the flu vaccine free of charge to those with underlying health conditions.

Details on venues, MVU locations, and participating pharmacies in Glasgow are available at NHSGGC - Winter Vaccination Programme 2025/26
