Objectives

The purpose of this SOP is to outline the correct and safe counting and disposal procedure for the management of SNI, to ensure patient safety by eliminating the risk of retained or missing SNI’s.  

Scope

This SOP applies to all GGC Doctors, Midwives and other members of the clinical team likely to be present during a surgical procedure being undertaken following birth, out with theatre (labour ward birth room, patient’s home) and who are required to be aware of the procedure of performing a swab, needle and instrument (SNI) count.

*Trained staff refers to all members of staff who have completed “GGC accountable items management” education package.

Maternity obstetrics and midwifery staff, obstetrics and midwifery students, and health care support workers
