Prominent ear correction
Procedures not routinely provided by NHSScotland
- Prominent Ear Correction for mild / moderate prominence.
- Surgery should not be considered under the age of 8. New referrals over age 18 will not be considered.
- Specialist ear reconstruction services should not be considered under this pathway.
Clinical psychology
- All approved referrals will be seen by a specialist Clinical Psychologist.
BMI
- There are no specific BMI restrictions.
- If BMI is significantly raised, consider carefully whether patient is appropriate for this type of surgery.
Considerations for treatment
Indications for referral
- Only extreme prominence (as assessed the referral panel, usually mastoid – helical rim >30mm) will be considered.
- Severe asymmetry
- Referral should be accompanied by a good quality photograph/image and clear indication of criteria for procedure.
Contraindications for referral
- Prominent ear correction will not be supported.
Waiting Times
- These patients are not subject to the 18 Weeks Referral to Treatment Standard.
