Criteria for referral (transient symptoms of)

  • Unilateral weakness
  • Unilateral sensory loss
  • New onset word finding difficulties/impaired comprehension
  • Unilateral painless loss of vision
  • Vertigo with other brain stem symptoms
  • Diplopia with other brain stem symptoms
  • Unsteadiness with other brain stem symptoms

Symptoms unlikely to be TIAs

  • Generalised weakness
  • Presyncope/ Syncope
  • Fatigue
  • Incontinence
  • Worsening confusion
  • Isolated vertigo
  • Isolated diplopia 
  • Tinnitus
  • Scintillating scotoma
  • Amnesia
  • Drop attacks
