- In the event of further bleeding elevate the limb and apply direct pressure to the bleeding point.
- If you are unable to do this (i.e because you or an assistant can’t reach the bleeding point) or the bleeding doesn’t stop within 10 minutes then return to the Emergency Department at Ninewells Hospital.
- If you are unable to arrange timely and suitable transport OR feel unwell, dizzy or faint then you should call 999 and ask for an ambulance.
ED varicose vein follow-up pathway
Warning
- Go to ICE requesting
- Click on “hosp dept P-Z”
- Click on “vascular Labs”
- Click on “vein scan” for the relevant leg
- Highlight “varicose vein” in the pop-up box
- Write “bleeding varicose vein pathway” in the clinical details box
- Input vascular consultant of the day as requesting consultant and vascular outpatients as the location of referral
- Complete request
- A member of the vascular lab team will appoint investigation and arrange appointment from the ICE request
