Dundee Dental Hospital Specialist Services: Orthodontics - Who to Refer

Treatment provided in DDHRS and Broxden Dental Centre

We accept the following for treatment within the Orthodontic Department
Multidisciplinary orthodontic cases with:
  • Orofacial clefting and orthognathic surgery
  • Restorative dentistry e.g. hypodontia
  • Paediatric dentistry e.g. delayed eruption
  • Minor oral surgery e.g. ectopic canines.
Orthodontic treatment cases:
  • Orthodontic cases with an IOTN DHC 4 and aesthetic component 6 or above.
  • Orthognathic cases with IOFTN of 4 or 5. Cases IOFTN of 3 will be considered.
  • Orthodontic treatment for patients with Additional Needs.
Teaching
  • A limited number of lower category cases are required for teaching and training.

 

Treatment not provided for within DDHRS and Broxden Dental Centre

Orthodontic Treatment is not provided within Dundee Dental Hospital for:
Patients with caries
  • High caries rate & risk which includes patients with inadequate oral hygiene
  • Heavily restored dentition with poor prognosis of more than 1 tooth per quadrant.
Patients with periodontal disease
  • Patients BPE scores of 3 or 4
  • Patients who have experienced migration of anterior teeth due to periodontal disease even if the periodontal disease is no longer active.
Other
  • Patients who have experienced relapse due to poor compliance with retainers
  • Patients moving to Tayside that had their initial orthodontic treatment started in Specialist Practice.

 

Adult patients aged 25 and over

Adult patients over the age of 25 will, in general, only be accepted for treatment if the following criteria is met:
Minimally restored dentition with no active periodontal disease
Minimally restored dentition with no drifting or mobility of teeth due to periodontal disease
One or less root filled, crowned or extracted (due to pathology) permanent tooth in each arch
One or less poor prognosis tooth per arch not including traumatised teeth
No over-eruption of teeth due to loss of permanent teeth because of caries/periodontal disease
