Referral Information

The following cases are likely to be accepted for treatment within the Paediatric Department Specialist Clinic
Dental trauma
  • Children with complex dento-alveolar trauma ( eg luxation injuries, crown root fractures)
  • Complications arising from dental trauma such as non vital teeth with open apices & root resorption

Odontogenic infection & tooth wear
  • Patients with genuine emergencies such as pain and swelling in an uncooperative child should be referred urgently
  • Management of non-carious tooth surface loss ( progressive cases and requiring restorative management)
Dental anomalies
  • Developmental conditions such as Amelogenesis Imperfecta, Dentinogenises Imperfecta, molar incisor hypomineralisation, hypodontia, microdontia, macrodontia
  • Provision of restorative care for these conditions
  • Intrinsic tooth discolouration of aesthetic concern
  • Eruption abnormalities, odontomes, impacted teeth infraoccluding teeth and supernumerary teeth
Paediatric Oral Medicine
  • Soft tissue lesions such as granulomas, cysts, intractable oral ulceration etc
Gingival & periodontal conditions
  • Non plaque induced gingival conditions
  • Diagnosis & management of aggressive periodontitis
  • Drug induced gingival overgrowth
Medically compromised patients
  • Assessment and management of children with medical comorbidity, who require input from other hospital based teams such as haematology or cardiology in order to meet their dental health needs
  • Assessment and monitoring of the dental health of hospital inpatients, including the provision of urgent dental treatment prior to significant medical interventions i.e. cardiac surgery, bone marrow ablation, chemotherapy; management of mucositis
  • Assessment and treatment of complex dental or craniofacial conditions requiring a multidisciplinary input to treatment planning and care provision such as cleft lip and palate, and children with complex syndromes such as DiGeorge and Treacher Collins

NB. It is anticipated such patients would continue to be seen regularly within primary care for preventive support

Neonates
  • Assessment and provision of dental care for neonates
Soft tissue surgery
  • Treatment of children with significant tongue-tie interfering with feeding or speech
  • Management of abnormal frenal attachments
Teaching
  • Cooperative children requiring primary care treatment will be accepted for a course of treatment based on need for student clinic patients.

 

Treatment within the Paediatric Department at Dundee Dental Hospital is not provided for:
Dental trauma
  • Cooperative patients with simple dental trauma: crown fractures, simple luxations, teeth requiring pulpotomy or root canal treatment for mature teeth
Cooperative child patients with caries
  • Prevention should be carried out in Primary Care as per SDCEP guidelines
  • Caries management should be carried out in Primary Care
Patient management and non-complex medical problems
  • Patients with Dental Anxiety should initially be referred to the PDS
  • Children with non-complex medical issues (e.g. Asthma) should be managed in primary care
Patients meeting PDS referral criteria
  • Dental anxiety and have proven unable to co-operate with routine dental treatment in a primary care setting.
  • Additional support needs which make dental care more difficult to provide.
  • VALAC assessment (Vulnerable and looked after children)- unless specifically directed to HDS
  • Assessment and management of severe early childhood caries. Assessment and management of unstable progressive caries in the mixed and permanent dentition where a standard preventive programme in primary care has been unsuccessful
  • Management of children with additional needs or learning difficulties, autism who cannot be accommodated by the general dental teams
  • Enhanced behavioural management techniques and provision of inhalation sedation
  • Treatment planning for patients requiring extractions under general anaesthesia (GA)
