Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Initial Management

Initial assessment, investigation and management of irritable bowel syndrome takes place in primary care as per the agreed pathway. Note is intended for 16-40 year olds and suggested for cautions in older age groups.  
 
Guidance on drug treatments/therapeutic management for IBS. 

Who to Refer

  • As per pathway 
  • Patients with red flags or abnormal investigations - consider need for GI or colorectal service referral.  
  • Patients with confirmed clinical diagnosis of IBS  (without red-flags and with normal investigations, including coeliac screen) can be referred to Dietetic-Led IBS Service.   
  • NHST management of IBS.
