Warning
  • Friction from the Iliotibial Band over the lateral epicondyle of the distal femur is a source of localised lateral knee pain, particularly in distance runners.
  • Activity modification and physiotherapy with stretches and correction of any muscle imbalances are the mainstay of treatment. Type of footwear and pronated feet have also been implicated and a podiatry or orthotics referral may be appropriate. Corticosteroid injection may help more severe cases, but this is unlikely to completely cure the problem.
  • There are no proven effective operations for ITB friction syndrome and therefore we do not offer surgical consultation for this condition.
