Absence reporting
Standard operating procedure: resident sickness absence (medical staff)
If a resident is unable to work, they should notify the on-call team by calling (via switchboard):
1. The gynaecology or obstetric consultant on call.
AND
2. Leave a message on 0131 242 1685 or email (Helen Brauer, Directorate Assistant).
3. Email womensservicestraineeleave@nhslothian.scot.nhs.uk when able (copy to rie.regrota@gmail.com) to provide an estimate of duration of absence.
Residents must speak to a consultant directly to notify absence. It is not appropriate to leave a message/email/WhatsApp.
It will be the shared responsibility of the on-call gynaecology and obstetric consultants to organise cover in the first instance. The rota is available on Health Roster/ Employee Online/ LOOP or Microsoft Teams > Women’s Services Rotas > RIE Obs and Gynae Junior Doctor Rota > Files. It is not the responsibility of the rota coordinator to organise short-term cover.
For out-of-hours cover, Residents of appropriate grade should be contacted regarding cover, taking into consideration their current scheduled activity and surrounding work pattern. Please see the Resident Doctors Contact List RIE on the Teams Channel.
It is a contractual requirement of doctors to cover occasional, short notice brief periods of absence where practical. Any additional hours worked may be taken, where possible, as time back in lieu or alternatively paid at locum rates.
