Introduction
What is Hirschprung's disease?
Hirschprung's is a condition of the bowel where there is an absence of nerve cells. This means the affected area of bowel does not work well enough to empty. It can either be short or long segment.
What is a rectal washout?
A rectal washout is a way of emptying the lower bowel using a narrow rectal tube and normal saline solution.
Why is it necessary for a baby to have rectal washouts?
At present the baby is unable to empty the bowel fully without help. Rectal washouts are performed to decompress the bowel and deflate the abdomen by removing stool and gas.
Rectal washouts are used as temporary management in babies with Hirschprung's until surgery is performed.
How often should I do a rectal washout?
A healthcare professional will provide advice on this before the baby is discharged from hospital. It is usually at least once a day even if the baby is passing stool without help. It is very important that the baby's bowel is completely emptied each time. It may also be necessary to do a washout if the baby's tummy is distended at any time.
When is the best time to do a washout?
It is best to do the washout at a time when the baby is relaxed and settled. For some, this may be after a feed or for others, before a feed. A routine will soon be established which will suite the baby's needs. The washout should not be rushed to ensure it is effective.
