Objectives

Purpose of this guideline:

  • To aid with instruction of parents/carers and healthcare professionals to ensure that they can perform rectal washouts.
  • To provide guidance for staff to ensure a cognisant and safe approach for performing rectal washouts.
  • To advise about potential problems that may arise and how to manage them.

To enable you:

  1. To perform the bowel washout safely.
  2. To empty the bowel effectively.
  3. To recognise and manage complications.

All those involved in the instruction and care of babies requiring rectal washouts.

Audience

To whom this guideline applies:

  • Healthcare staff involved in the care of children requiring rectal washouts.
  • Respite staff/Carers involved in the care of children requiring rectal washouts.

For families and carers in association with practical teaching by a professional.

This teaching guideline is a general guide to be used in conjunction with an explanation and a practical session with a healthcare professional competent in this skill.
