Rectal tube does not go in rectum easily |
There may be stool low in the rectum |
Do not force the rectal tube. Remove and check if the rectal tube is blocked with stool. Reinsert the rectal tube and flush with a small volume of saline. |

Fluid does not run in with gravity |
There may be stool low in the rectum |
Hold the syringe higher. Use the 50ml syringe plunger to gently start the flow. If this is unsuccessful, remove the rectal tube and flush as above. |

Fluid does not drain out |
The rectal tube may be blocked with stool |
Pull the rectal tube slightly backwards and forwards and remove rectal tube slowly. (fluid may escape around the sides of the rectal tube or when the rectal tube is removed) |
|
No stool passed in the washout fluid |
The rectum may be empty |
If the abdomen is soft and flat retry later. If no stool is passed in a day, seek medical advice (please refer to How to Seek Help) |
|
There is blood in the stool |
The rectal tube may have irritated the lining of the bowel |
If it is a small amount in the fluid, no action is required. If bleeding continues in the nappy seek medical advice (please refer to How to Seek Help) |
