Why have I been referred for psychological therapy?
Your doctor or healthcare professional has suggested that psychological therapy might be helpful for you at this time. This is usually due to distress, which is having a significant impact on your life, which may due to things that happened recently or in the past.
We often see people who have been experiencing a range of difficulties, including:
- Low mood/depression
- Anxiety
- Difficulties due to traumatic events
- Carer strain
- Difficulties adjusting to physical health problems
Most people will experience one or more of these in their lifetime and it is not uncommon to need help, just like you would with a physical illness.
What is psychological therapy?
Psychological therapy is a way of helping people to make sense of their difficulties and to learn ways to cope. This may include exploring your thoughts, feelings and behaviour. There are different types of therapy and the psychologist will discuss with you which would be the best fit for you.
What does psychological therapy look like?
Sessions usually last up to an hour. At your first session, the psychologist will try to learn more about you and ask about the problems you’ve been having. This helps them to better understand your situation and to come up with a plan together. They will explain what will be involved and give you an opportunity to ask questions and a chance to decide if therapy is right for you at this time.
Therapy may involve:
- Talking about current difficulties
- Making links with relevant past experiences
- Learning new ways of coping
- Practicing these coping skills in session and between sessions
Do I have to do anything to prepare?
You will be sent some forms with your appointment letter. Please try to fill these in before the session and bring them along with you.
Who will my information be shared with?
The information that you share within your sessions is confidential and will only be accessed by relevant professionals who are involved in your care. We will write to your GP and/or referrer with a summary of our work together.
This will all be explained at your appointment and you will be welcome to ask any questions.
If you have any other questions or concerns regarding your appointment or psychological therapies, please do get in touch.
