Preventing infection in social care settings

The pages in this section each highlight a common potential infection risk within social care settings, providing an example scenario of when the risk may occur. Follow the links at the bottom of each page to view the standard infection control precautions which should be followed to help prevent the spread of infection.

Colour coding - Expand to see colour codes

Pages are colour-coded according to the corresponding potential infection risk.

  • Red - faeces, urine, vomit and/or blood
  • Teal - wound exudate (wound leakage/oozing)
  • Green - sputum (mucous), nasal discharge (runny nose), or coughing
  • Purple - unexplained skin conditions
  • Magenta - washing and dressing, household tasks, foot care, oral and eye care
  • Turquoise - PEG feeding (tube feeding), catheter care, colostomy care, PIC/Hickman lines (medication lines), enteral feeding

Faeces, urine, vomit and/or blood

Wound exudate (wound leakage/oozing)

Sputum (mucous), nasal discharge (runny nose), or coughing

Unexplained skin conditions

Washing and dressing, household tasks, foot care, oral and eye care
