Improvements delivered in January

Some key improvements delivered during January include:

a) Embedding RDS and toolkits in external websites and systems

RDS and all its toolkits have now been whitelisted so that they can be embedded In i-Frames within Trakcare and other external systems. NHS Highland originally requested this improvement, and have provided a screenshot of the NHS Highland TAM app loaded in the context of a patient record in Trakcare:

I appreciate that a number of Boards use the Evidence icon in the Trakcare menu to open up a list of knowledge resources, however this gives another option. And it is not limited to Trakcare – the same approach can be used to embed RDS and toolkits in other sites and systems. Please contact ann.wales3@nhs.scot if you would like to explore these possibilities further.

b) New visual design and navigation option

The RDS now offers a ‘Masonry tile’ design option for presenting items on a toolkit homepage and listing pages. The Masonry tile approach is sometimes referred to as the ‘Pinterest-style’ design as it is similar to the way images are organized on Pinterest.

The Masonry approach arranges tiles based on available vertical space, rather than adhering to rigid, fixed-height rows. This approach allows items of varying heights to fit together, minimising empty gaps. This results in a non-uniform arrangement of tiles which creates a dynamic visual impression that engages users. It has the benefit of avoiding giving undue priority to any one tile.

The screenshot below shows how the Masonry tile approach looks in the Care Inspectorate Dementia Resources toolkit currently under development:

Mobile app improvements

App store information

The title of the RDS app in the mobile app stores is now Right Decision Service,’ and the brief app description is ‘NHS Scotland decision support.’ As you know, we are constrained by the limited number of characters the app stores allow, but I hope this gives consistency with the website title and along with the NHS Scotland logo in the app icon makes the NHS Scotland ownership clear.

Embedded videos

Embedded videos are now working on the mobile app – please get in touch if you have continued problems with access.

Ongoing RDS developments

Priorities for development at this time include continuing work on:

  • Upgrading of the RDS content management software, which will address some low and medium vulnerability issues
  • Implementing Microsoft 365 authentication for editor access. This will enable us to pull down reports of editors on an NHS Board basis.
  • Strengthening authentication for access to password-protected RDS toolkits.
