Assessment

Hyperlipidaemia management guidelines on Athena (only available on intranet)

This information can also be found on the Adult Therapeutics Handbook app.

When and how to refer

Prior to referral please ensure a lipid profile has been checked at least twice (including at least once fasting if triglycerides are raised) and that secondary causes of hypercholesterolaema and hypertriglyceridaemia (hypothyroidism, nephrotic syndrome, diabetes etc.) have been excluded.

Referrals are accepted for fasting triglycerides concentrations persistently > 10mmol/L, in the absence of a secondary cause such as poorly controlled diabetes or alcohol excess.

Note, referrals will not be accepted for patients with diabetes unless it is well controlled, as hypertriglycerideamia is usually secondary to hyperglycaemia in these cases, and resolves with improved glycaemic control.

Please consider if your query could be answered effectively and rapidly by contacting the clinical mailbox. If an outpatient consultation is more appropriate, please refer using SCI Gateway. Note the clinic appointment offered to the patient may not be at their closer hospital.
