Assessment

Signs and symptoms

  • Neuropathy- with possible development of pain when there has been an absence of sensation previously
  • Trauma history- may be a mild sprain (often trigger) but can develop without trauma
  • Deep aching feeling
  • Markedly warm and extremely swollen foot
  • Acute local inflammation may be where injury is
  • Possible slight musculoskeletal deformity in early stages
  • Bounding pedal pulses - early phase
  • May also develop possible bone infection and/or inflammation of joint membranes.

Risk factors

  • History of diabetes or peripheral neuropathy

When & how to refer

Follow urgent Diabetic clinic pathway and/or urgent Orthopaedic pathway.
