Assessment

Signs & symptoms

  • Swelling, bruising around wrist
  • Tenderness over anatomical snuff box/scaphoid tubercle
  • Increased pain with gripping or pain movement wrist/ thumb
  • Wrist deformity (not always present)
  • Commonly misdiagnosed as a wrist sprain
  • In some cases, a scaphoid fracture may not show on x-ray up until 10-14 days post injury.

Risk factors

  • Trauma
  • History of fall on outstretched hand
  • Prevalent in males aged 15-30 and females with osteoporosis.

ED acutely

Subacute urgent Orthopaedics.
