  • Typical symptoms of infection and inflammation
  • Kanavel cardinal signs
    • flexed posture of the digit
    • uniform swelling of the digit
    • tenderness over the length of the involved tendon sheath
    • severe pain on attempted hyperextension of the digit.

Risk factors

  • Recent cut, scrap or puncture wound, such as a human or animal bite.
