Assessment

Signs & symptoms

  • Fatigue and cramping symptoms in lower limbs made worse by activity.
  • Night cramps.
  • Altered colour of limb extremities.
  • Reduced hair growth on legs.
  • Thin/pale skin that won't heal.
  • Weak/absent pulses.
  • DVT.
  • Aneuryms-pulsatile mass, syncope, ischemic limbs.

Risk factors

  • Smoker or previous smoker
  • Hypertension
  • Over 50 years of age
  • Male> female
  • Obesity
  • History of cerebrovascular accident/ischemic heart disease/diabetes mellitus (CVA/ IHD/ DM)
  • Family history if cardiovascular conditions
  • Poor lifestyle factors
  • Trauma
  • Surgery
  • Cardiac pacemaker
  • Malignancy
  • Pregnancy or oral contraceptives
  • Indwelling central venous catheter.

When & how to refer

Refer to ED/relevant service dependent on clinical presentation.
