Warning

All patients under 16 with DKA should be brought to their nearest hospital for initial assessment. If they require to be admitted from SJH ED they will have to be moved to RHCYP. They all should have an alert saying this in their notes.

Please use the following attached document (for paediatric patients in DKA requiring transfer) as opposed to the full DKA protocol pathway 1 for patients presenting to SJH ED.

Note the paediatric DKA protocols are different to adult protocols.

Please get all calculations double checked, preferably by the paediatric team to try and prevent any errors occurring. Of note there is also a link to a calculation checker included in the document (BSPED DKA calculator).

There is an HDU consultant based at RHCYP, where the paediatric DKA patients are admitted, and any transfer needs to be discussed with them, and the medical consultant for RHCYP, as well as the ScotSTAR transfer team.
