Warning

Plan for discharge of the patient. This needs

  • Appropriate discharge supplies (e.g. leg bags, spare bags etc.)
  • Appropriate discharge advice (see the sections on advice and leaflets)
  • Appropriate follow-up

If there are other medical issues, please admit the patient to the appropriate specialty.

Discharge supplies

Please give the patient:

  • leg bags
  • leg bag support
  • (if available) night drainage bag
  • if the patient is male and over 65 years old, consider starting alfuzosin 10mg daily. Ask the patient to contact GP for their repeat prescription.

Discharge advice

Please see the catheter and TWOC patient information leaflet section in the handbook.

Follow-up

For most patients where we have inserted a catheter for urinary retention, a trial without catheter (TWOC) needs to be arranged. As of August 2024, SJH ED is continuing the longstanding policy of having follow-up directly with the WGH urology nurses (loth.wghnurseurologyreferrals@nhs.scot).

In July 2024, the urology team have been recommending that TWOCs can be done in the community either via district nurses or the local CTAC [Community Treatment and Care Services]. However, this has not been agreed by the West Lothian primary care teams. Therefore we will continue our current pathway of referring to WGH Nurse Urology [intranet link], until an alternative pathway has been agreed by relevant parties.

If you do make a referral to the urology team, please use the referral form either linked here or on the intranet page in the paragraph above. You can send the form to loth.wghnurseurologyreferrals@nhs.scot.
