Warning

If required, your physiotherapist and occupational therapist will order you an appropriate wheelchair and cushion to meet your needs.

After you leave the spinal unit, the responsibility for maintaining or renewing your wheelchair will be transferred to your local wheelchair service. The name and telephone number of your local wheelchair service will be provided in the “Wheelchair, Seating and Pressure Care” section of your Therapy Discharge Summary.

If there is any damage to your wheelchair or cushion, you should contact your local wheelchair service to organise a repair. Typically, wheelchair cushions will need to be renewed every few years. This could be sooner if the cushion is damaged/well used, or longer if there are no issues with it.

If your existing wheelchair is damaged beyond repair, or your needs have significantly changed, your wheelchair will be replaced. This may involve attending a clinic at your local wheelchair service for an assessment.
