Assessment

Signs & symptoms

  • New onset hip/ groin or diffuse knee pain
  • Limping
  • Deformity- shortened and external rotation of hip
  • Decreased range of motion of hip
  • Unable to stand on one leg

Risk factors

  • Age 11-17 years old
  • Boys > girls
  • Obesity
  • Family history
  • Atraumatic/ minor injury
  • Endocrine/ metabolic disorder/ inflammatory condition.

When & how to refer

Refer urgently to Paediatric Orthopaedics.
